A whole raft of updates

As Si posted a few days ago, the ComputingStuff team has been hard at work improving the site.

We’re not fully ready with everything yet, but here are some things we’ve already done:

  • Updated all the LAN party stories to point at the new gallery and completed the last LAN party story (finally!)
  • Moved all the pictures to the new gallery
  • Added a feed of the current 5 posts from the forums and fixed all the feeds to be valid RSS 2
  • Moved to Feedburner
  • Fixed the feeds so that they actually update on time!
  • Updated all the back-end systems to the current versions
  • Re-organised the forums, adding new boards and combining some others
  • Completely re-did the about page with new contact information, server details and link graphics
  • Updated the terms of use with the new linking policy (simply: link to anything you want)
  • Fixed a number of small issues reported to us through the forums (thanks guys!)

That’s just some of the thing’s we’ve done so far – watch out for even more changes and improvements coming your way in the coming days and weeks – we’ll keep you updated every stage of the way :)

Updates

Hey guys,

We’re in the process of making some design tweaks, adding some new features, and updating the server software.

New features to look out for:

  • Most recent forum posts on the main page
  • ComputingStuff merchandise – it’s gonna be great!
  • Many more exciting new features!

We’ll keep updating the news page as we implement new features, so watch this space!

ComputingStuff hits version 5!

Woohoo – we’re now officially at version 5.

Since ComputingStuff started off back in 2002, we have had easy times and difficult times, with changing hosts and forum software to make things even more complicated.
Well, we decided that it was time that a more permanent home was found for ComputingStuff, and Simon stepped in with the great idea of hosting it himself. This means that the site is now much more flexible in terms of what we can do with it and the stuff we can add.

As usual, we took the time to port over all the content from the old site, as well as the well-loved site theme! We now have a new CMS, however, which makes it even easier to post new articles. Plus, we know how to create new pages on it for the first time ever, which is an added advantage ;)

We’ve also ported the forums over here, complete with all the posts and users. All you need to do is login and continue as usual.

As well as that, we also have a few new things to tell you about. The biggest ones so far are the updated Slashdot feed on the left to keep all you computer buffs constantly in the know, the site search (which now works!) and the XML syndication feature, which allows you to keep up with ComputingStuff news from the comfort of your newsreader, making it even easier to make ComputingStuff your first choice!

We hope that you like the new site, and we look forward to getting comments and suggestions for it. Have fun!
