Windows 2000 Server Installation Guide

  1. Go into your BIOS and select the first boot device to be your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Boot from your CD.
  3. Watch all the drivers loading up (well it is something to do!).
  4. If you have any additional RAID/IDE/SCSI controllers, have the drivers disk ready and press F6 when prompted.
  5. At the next screen, as we are setting up a clean installation of the server, we need to press Enter.
  6. If you are one of those people who read license agreements, do that now to avoid disappointment ;-), otherwise just press F8.
  7. Here you will get to choose your partitioning. WARNING! Be careful in this part because you could lose a lot of data if you do it wrong! Select your clean disk/partition and press Enter to install onto that partition.
  8. Now you will get a choice of file system. Choose your desired file system and select Format.
  9. Next, Setup will automatically start copying a load of files to your hard disk. After this, Setup will reboot itself into the graphical part.
  10. Now, Setup will detect all of your hardware so it may be a good idea to have all your external devices switched on.
  11. Now you get the Regional Settings box asking where you are and what keyboard layout you would like to use.
  12. Now you get to put your name and company in (a hard task for some).
  13. Here, you insert the CD-Key which is on a label on the back of your Windows 2000 Server CD case.
  14. Next, we need to know how licensing is going to work. If you are running a small network with just one server it is probably best to just select "Per server licensing". However if you plan on having more than one server, it is best to select "Per Seat Licensing".
  15. At this point in setup, you will choose a name for your server. You also get to choose the Administrator password. WARNING! Don't leave the Administrator password blank, especially if your server is connected to the internet. This is just asking for trouble! Try to choose a password with letters, numbers and characters in because it is much harder to crack!
  16. Here is the fun bit: choosing all the components. Choose which ones you need and deselect any extra ones to save space.
  17. Now, check the time is correct and put in which time zone you are in.
  18. This is one of the main parts of Setup; the networking. At first, just install the simple networking components which are "TCP/IP" (giving the server it's own unique IP address in the process), "Client for Microsoft Networks" and File and Print sharing for "Microsoft Networks".
  19. Now you get to select if you would like to join a workgroup or domain. As we are setting up the first server in the network, just press "Next".
  20. Here is the easy bit: sit back, relax and enjoy while Setup configures the server to your own custom choice.
  21. Just press "Finish"!
