The eighth ComputingStuff LAN Party

The eighth ComputingStuff LAN party was held at Simon's (PCRanger) house on 18th February 2006 in celebration of the half term.

This party must have broken the record for the longest planned - a LAN party for one day or another has been in the planning process for quite a few months. The idea of a Christmas or New Year LAN party did not take off.

The party got off to a shuddering start, with Simon setting everything up in the morning and then waiting for participants to arrive. Dan was the first to arrive with his rig. Ruben arrived next with his trusty Apple laptop complete with the incompatible-with-just-about-every-game-ever-made Mac OS X. Again, there was no time or source to install a virtual machine, so he was relegated to writing this report and doing some other tasks. Toby arrived sometime after with his rig and proceeded to set it up quickly. George arrived a little while later, a friend of Toby's. It was his first time at a ComputingStuff LAN, but he quickly learned the ropes, which is more than can be said about his laptop, that required a little thumping to get it to recognise the network.

During this time, Dan was setting up his PC with all the games. There was a little trouble with Rollcage, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a quick smack to the side of the PC ;) Ruben took the time to update the Mac with the latest patches as well as installing Skype and the latest version of Firefox, ready for anything that came his way!

This was also a party of very little in the way of setbacks, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed the first part. The separate charged camera flash also made it's third debut, but this time, the room was light, so the effects weren't too bad. That is, until darkeness set in...

Just like the last time this happened, many games were sabotaged with the help of the flash, and also for the first time, Simon's digicam.

At the same time, Ruben was sitting around doing nothing useful while trying to get his laptop working with Windows games - just don't mention Bochs! He has promised to be more useful next time.

All in all, a good time was had by all!TM
